Words to Travel By:

“Bizarre travel plans are dancing lessons from God.” – Kurt Vonnegut

"We can't be lost.  We're making such good time." – a friend

"I've been absolutely terrified every moment of my life - and I've never let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do."  – Georgia O'Keeffe [Because bridges are my kryptonite.]

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” - Mark Twain

No One Expects the Texas Zebra!

Somewhere just beyond Cisco, Texas -- population 300 or so and home to Conrad Hilton's very first hotel -- my GPS was too busy doing something else to navigate (apparently) and sent me down the wrong road before coming to her senses and screaming at me to "Make a U-turn in 400 feet."

But there they were: three adult zebra and one little fella.

Llano, Texas

I was in Llano at dusk.  (If you speak any Spanish, you'll want to pronounce the double Ls as a "Y" sound. You'd be wrong.  This is Texas.  Say "Lawn-o.")  It's a tiny place with a lovely town center built around this courthouse. The Llano News is across the street on one side and the Lantex Theater is across the street on another.  I was rapidly losing the sun, but I managed to get a few shots.

There was a monument to every war and all the veterans of them.  The Confederate War Memorial stands under the Texas and United States flags, but the wind was insufficient to unfurl them completely.

This is Where We Begin...

This year's itinerary takes me to New Mexico first.

"It was all so far away - there was quiet and an untouched feel to the country and I could work as I pleased." – Georgia O'Keeffe

Until then....
